Don’t get me wrong, I think Kandasamy is a fenomenal author, but this novel didn’t quite hit for me.

I related heavily to the Mixed Marriage chapter, and the prose is actually beautiful. Plus, Kandasamy’s writing process insight on the side of the pages was so fulfilling to read.

But if I was rating it like any other fiction novel, it doesn’t quite hit. As soon as it got interesting, as soon as it got me hooked, it ended. And I guess that’s how life is sometimes, but if you are writing fiction, I feel like there should be a clear plot to the novel.

So 3 stars for the beauty of the language used, but not for the story itself.

wanted to like it for it's unique structure but I have to say this style of book looses me every single time. I am so excited by the idea of experimental writing that throws out the structures that are pre set but I just can never like the reality as much as the idea. perhaps also just coming out of my own relationship ended I found the topic painful and not in a cathartic way, just in an uncomfortable "let this be over soon".

Jesus fucking Christ. What a fantastic piece of work. I am so saddened by the state of the world right now, and this book is so reflective of that feeling of doom and rage. She writes with such eloquence; no word out of place, the emotions she wants to elicit crescendo as the book progresses. What a brave thing it is to live and love and pursue art in these times, she seems to say. But, also how trite. How do you integrate the domestic and the political; but how can you not?
