I picked up the book hoping it would be inspiring but it ended up being a very scientific explanation of what walking is. It read like a textbook but with no organization or diagrams. And I found the persuasive parts of the book to be very half-hearted.

I had hoped for a book about the scientific marvel that is walking or about the amazing things people have done via walking. It's not as interesting as that. The book is mostly, "walking is good for you and your should do it more" with oblique references to unnamed studies and anecdotes. At least it's short.

Leest niet heel soepel weg, kost wat energie, maar is niettemin heel interessant.

In Praise Of Walking gives you all the scientifically-backed information you need to get up and get moving. Unfortunately, the book fails to take a step past that. My advice: take a walk.

Enjoyed on audio while walking. Especially liked the city planning aspects although it’s easier said than done since the way we operate requires cost considerations and use for all. I personally prefer walking on natural surfaces but the maintenance likely wouldn’t work for Ada compliance and maintenance costs in an urban environment.

I love walking and this book felt like a good fit. While the information is solid, I found the reading experience to be dry and hard to understand.

3 Stars.

Lots of scientific support for walking, and for its many positive outcomes, whether physical, social, intellectual, or spiritual. Still, though, it often didn't hold my interest and I found my mind wandering. YMMV.

Interesting & engaging, definitely was a good impetus to get out and even more than I currently do (which to be fair, is a lot). Irritating that while the author spent a lot of time researching many subjects, he seems to have done zero research into current studies on obesity, as many of his comments indicate a fundamental misunderstanding of the science of weight and weight loss (for example “if getting information out there was the solution, we would have no anti-vaccine movement, no smokers, and no obesity”) which was disappointing & served (for me) to undermine his position as expert on most of the other things he discussed.

Great read! For anyone who loves walking or perhaps better even for those who don’t love it… yet. This will inspire you to get out of your chair and move around!
