This graphic novel is the epitome of how a picture speaks a thousand words. Despite the minimal text, it tells a powerful and devastating story about the refugee crisis. The artwork is stunning as well and the use of colours to tell a story is brilliant.
I can understand the mixed reviews but personally I loved this book.

Beautiful illustrations and timely subject. Sparse. I am a little conflicted, I feel the sparseness was both good and bad. Good because it allowed for the reader to draw a lot of their own conclusions... however I would have preferred the characters be more fleshed and we could get to know the characters a bit better. I liked that the ending was honest.

The illustrations are nice, but this was literally a five-minute read and doesn’t stand up to the depth and gravitas of similar graphic novels about war/refugee experiences (“When Stars Are Scattered” and “A Game for Swallows” and even the graphic version of “The Breadwinner”).

This sparsely worded graphic novel looks at young Syrian refugee Amina. As her overfull boat capsizes and she begins to sink into the sea, Amina remembers her life in Syria that led up to her present circumstances. Her parents struggled to put food on the table, as money grew tight and the city crumbled around them. Amina's mother told her to always remember Zenobia, the bygone Syrian empress who showed that women are capable of great things, and it is Zenobia who Amina's thoughts turn to in the swirling ocean.
Zenobia paints a heart-breaking picture of the plight of Syrian refugees, however doesn't offer much in the way of information or context for Amina's story.

El relat cru i invisibilitzat de l'exili per la guerra amb una perspectiva infantil però no paternalista ni entendridora, tal qual deu ser. Molt recomanable, fins i tot em va fer plorar a la segona lectura... al metro...
