Despite having to read Persepolis as an assigned reading, I enjoyed this book immensely. Reading about such a tragic and multi-faceted situation as Iranian society throughout revolution and war but from the perspective of a young girl gives the novel that naive and childlike flair that leaves you reflecting after each vignette. I found that the more tragic ones were even more haunting in the simple, yet effective art style.

just a truly incredible story. the short, quick chapters make years of childhood pass by quickly and the art is striking and bold. marjane speaks with frankness and utter honesty and does not hide anything; her whole heart is bared in this book. while it is certainly not easy to read in any way, this story feels imperative, a necessary read. this book grips you tightly and refuses to let go, even after the last page.

Great emotional story of war and abuse induced on people of Iran. So important to read. The wriitng was very consise and showed the growing of Marji very smoothly. The art was beautiful, but sometimes terrifying. The next story is even more heartbreaking. This really shows what war and oppression can do for a young generation.

What a gorgeous graphic novel! Marjane writes and illustrates with honesty, humor and wit to convey her singular experience of her childhood in Iran and Austria, experiencing war and revolution, personal and communal rebellions, fundamentalism and political struggles and more. The graphic novel unfolds in a way that is at once attuned to daily life and Marjane's emotional world, as well as the larger global circumstances that inform her experiences. It is an epic of personal growth and the evolution of a country and a society, connected by a passion for family, home, Iran, friendship, justice and self expression. I felt parented by the meaning making efforts in this journey.
