i am utterly disappointed.
such a shattering cliffhanger in book two, and for what?

this book has 400 pages and i kid you not, around 300 were horribly uninteresting. the whole first half of the book was useless rambling - boring, uninspiring and devastatingly dry.

the twist and reveal and all that were fun and had potential, the delivery however was super unexciting and the wow-moment shadowed by the absolute nothingness the whole rest of the book was. great concept, such poor execution.

and don't even get me started on the ending.
the ending was the most frustrating thing ever. like yeah, we all love a happy ending, but
just how did orion survive? and i'm not saying that out of spite or malice, i liked him as a character. i just think he seriously should've died, because that would've been the most realistic and sensible outcome.

also, watching all the conflict and problems get solved in a little godlike act 20 pages before the end made me want to claw my eyes out.

there were a couple of scenes and happenings that hooked me for a few pages, a chapter at best - for example
the little liaison thing with liesel which surprised me BIG TIME, in a good way,
but the rest was absolutely not it.

i loved book one and two, and the author's catchy and quick writing style didn't disappoint in this one either, but the story - tragic.

I felt so many fucking feelings.

I cried like 40% of my reading time.

No joke this is a rough one but this series speaks to me on a deep level and this book is by FAR the best. And i say that having rated thd other 2 books 5⭐️ as well.

The character arcs. The deep messages about the radical nature of forgivness and the continuous work of a good life. The hope.

Chefs kiss. 5 stars. Hell 6 stars.

A great finale to a great series. I loved the book. It was a satisfying conclusion that matched the tone of the series. I could write a million words on how amazing this was without fully getting it across. Suffice it to say this is a series I will happily revisit and find new things each time. Mind the trigger warnings but I highly recommend it.

This book was 8 hours too long.   Everything with the trips to the enclaves,  unraveling the mystery, and saving Orion was great.  I liked the resolution of the book except for there being no karmic retribution for crimes against humanity. You can kill whoever you want basically?

Things that should have been left out. The acid trip with Yancy, all the time spent finding entrances to enclaves and the scholomance (we get it is an illusion and a maze), the whole side story with Liesel.   None of this improved the story and made it tedious.

After the cliff-hanger book 2 ended on I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it very quickly surpassed all expectations I had. This is my favourite book in the trilogy by far and expands the world outside the scholomance. I really enjoyed El's friendships which once again were more prominent in the story given Orion's ...situation. I also thought the plot twists in the story were amazing - Novik is just an incredible writer at everything she attempts it appears! Prepare yourself for some mild emotional devastation though as some of the things revealed really got me (in a good way though!).

I’m honestly kind of sad that I had to give this only three stars because I had such high hopes for this book. The first 50% of this book I was bored out of my mind but I just kept hoping that it was going to get better. It did get better. It really picked up and was really really good and made me laugh out loud a couple of times….for the last 50% of it. I feel like the first 50%. might’ve been better summarized in a paragraph or two so that way we could just jump into the story. It might’ve made for a really short book but at least I would not have had to sit through 200 pages of awful.

A stunning conclusion - to a brilliant trilogy - that
makes sense of the events of the first two novels and clarifies El’s purpose
. Novik’s magical world is desperately dark, but protagonist El and her people are tenacious in their pursuit of a glimmering, golden hope for a better future.
