Damn! What an ending to a book I’ve been listening to for forever. I can’t wait to physically read TOG and CC but for now the audiobooks are pretty good, I believe my rating will change once I physically read them.

The way I SCREAMED at the ending of this book, iykyk.

When I read a fantasy I want "save the world" vibes and this book delivered on that front more so than the murder mystery vibe that was HOEAB.

My favorite parts were about Ruhn and Lydia. I haven't read HOFAS yet but I have a feeling Lydia is going to be my #1 fav CC character soon. One of my least favorite parts was when Bryce and Hunt just kind of decided that they were mates. It felt so bland. Where's the big reveal? Also I'm getting a little tired of Danika's secrets being the answer to all of the plot holes.

I liked this one more that HOEAB.

A mess.

SJM is way too obsessed with lore and shit that you would only find in the back of a Dark Souls item descriptions. So many pages are dedicated to shit I don’t care about or stuff that isn’t relevant. Hell even many of the “plot twists” fall flat because while maybe impactful or clever on their own, they ultimately don’t mean much to the characters of the story.

Like cool, Rhysand is in the story. Awesome. But also like… who fucking cares? Why does Rhysand and co being there MATTER to Bryce? It reeks of an extremely awful style of storytelling where the author jingles a bunch of shiny objects in your face and screams, “DO YOU RECOGNIZE THE REFERENCE TO THAT THING YOU KNOW WOW ISN’T THAT COOL!” I guess I thought SJM was above all that hack garbage but I guess not lol.

If I’m sounding mean, it’s because there actually is a good book here. Behind all the really stupid plot turns, exhausting lore dumps, and SJM’s idiotic insistence on rehashing the same elements from previous novels to point of parody (main couple being mates, roaring while having sex, curled toes, main character often feeling less like a character and more like an overpowered OC from a very well written, but masturabotory, AO3 fanfic), is some really fantastic character writing, heart warming and sexy as fuck romances, some really gut wrenching emotional scenes, and some some really thrilling and fun encounters. The way the book really switches up the character dynamics is really reminiscent of some of her best works.

Bottomline: this features the best and worst of SJMs writing. I enjoyed it, but my god this feels like a parody of an SJM novel. I loved and hated it in equal measure I would say.
