This was my very first comic book ever and I am so happy with it!
I definitely didn't regret picking this one up!
The characters were well drawn and interesting to look at and it was so pleasing to look at the pages and drawings and colors!
The story is interesting, I like where this is going and it's so good to see where Fitchner comes from and what he's been through, especially that I already know what happens to him afterwards.

The part where he had that flashback just ripped my heart out, it actually makes perfect sense that he revolted and wanted to tear that society apart. They treated him like shit!!

Let me preface this by saying that I am just starting to get into comics so I am not a huge comic book person. I know stories from the comics of many famous franchises but I am still trying to learn and weave my way through the world of comics. Wow this story. So if you followed me for awhile you know that I LOVED Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy. I thought it was so interesting and I loved how he told the story and he made one of my favorite side characters ever, Sevro. When I found out he was coming out with comics about the Son of Ares who is a major player in Red Rising I knew that I wanted to read it. This was actually a really good comic, I loved the story telling because Pierce is a beautiful writer and I loved the artwork. It really brought the whole thing to life with the coloring and the way the characters are drawn. This first comic was definitely used to set up some backstory on the Son of Ares. In it you learn a lot about his past and why he has become how he is and I really did like that. I like learning the backstory of characters. That’s not to say that it isn’t devoid of action because there is definitely action at the end and it’s so interesting to watch because both Pierce and Eli didn’t hold back on the gore and guts that goes along with the series. I can’t wait to see where these comics are going to go because I thought this was a really solid start to this comic series.

Interesting backstory for Red Rising but I'm going to wait and see how the others pan out.

Super cool to see it in action. I hope there's a movie in the works eventually.

A background about Mars and Fitchner and a tiny bit of the Sons. I didn’t really expect much content. Just some visualisation of what everything looks like in PB’s eyes. So it’s pretty good.

BloodyDAMN.

I'll be honest and say that I don't normally read comics, not even when they tie-in to franchises/novels that I love. But, for this I made a major exception. How can I resist something that promises to tell me the story of Fitchner au Barca?

I can't. I really, really can't.

And what a brilliant start. It's violent, it's bloody, it's wonderfully illustrated. I particularly like little details such as speech bubbles for characters reflecting their Colour; it's a small thing, but (a) makes the dialogue a lot easier to follow and (b) just shows the level of care and attention to detail of the creative team.

The only problem now is that I suddenly understand how comic fans feel in getting brief little bites of great storytelling and then needing to wait, ravenous, for the next one.

Interesting and Provoking!

I love the Red Rising novels, and reading this was getting to see them in a whole new way. Stunning art and interesting story. Also bloodydamn gory. I didn't imagine the hand sigils the same way. Only issue is the various "colors" of the characters aren't as clear as I thought they would be when reading the novels. Interesting to see the clear differences in time period, prequel versus Darrow's world. Looking forward to reading more.

I love prequels. This is a good start to know more about Fitchner and the beginning of the Sons of Ares.
The introduction gives a brief description of the Red Rising world for those who have not yet read the Red Rising trilogy. But honestly, stop what you are doing and read it right now before reading this series.
I really like that the colors of the dialog bubbles tell you which Color of the society is speaking.
What I am not a big fan of is the style of drawing. It's too sketchy and messy. I know it's probably more expensive to produce, but I like clean and detailed comic drawings.
However, I am really excited about this new series. I want to know more about Fitchner, the Sons, and I hope to see baby Sevro.
