Lovely, smoothly readable, personal comics in the tradition of Lynda Barry, clashing a child’s perspective with the troubles of the real/adult world that crushes them. If this sounds like a downer, it’s not; the book is joyful even when it’s heartbreaking.

I really enjoyed this overall. The story “My Lil Sister Lena” was so heartbreaking, but incredibly powerful. As a white reader, I think it’s important to recognize that some of the actions that we think are “harmless,” and “not mean” — such as repeatedly touching without consent a Black person’s hair — are obviously the exact opposite, and can have very negative impacts on the person we’re targeting. Highly recommend.

This graphic novel explores the beauty of Black hair against white folks’ hyper-fixation with touching, controlling, commenting on, and ridiculing Black hair. The art was black and white but flowed with emotions and imagery.

Interconnected vignettes with a motif around hair, cute and has depth. I did like the art, but some of the text was tough to read at points.

Best book I’ve read this year. I love how deep the text part of this graphic novel goes, rare for a graphic novel. Also, the visual details capture so much emotion and story.

4.5 - the only reason why this is a 4.5 for me is because i felt that a few of the stories ended so abruptly and left me wanting more more more. i looooved!! this book so much though and i cannot wait for a full length book from flowers. i've never seen illustrations like hers and she is so talented. i don't think i've ever seen so many silly, playful, funny Black girls in one book and i'm grateful for that. this was a balm.

The various connection black women have with their hair is greatly seen in the stories Ebony Flowers shares with us. They were like snippets of lives/moments black women and girls have gone through once if not multiple times in our lives.
