I read this book last year...or maybe 2 years ago. Good book! I intend to eventually read the rest of the series. It's kind of a "what if" book--i.e. what if resources were scarce enough (or rather, controlled by the government enough) that we were only allowed 2 children...and the neighbors would turn you in to the police/government/Gestapo if they found out you had, say, 3 kids...and then BAD things would happen to you/your kids.

Loved the direction this book went. Curious to see how the story ends.

Grades 4-7--
As some of the younger Hunger Games fans look for other tales of dystopian societies, this story which introduces Luke and other "shadow children" will fit the bill and offer a lot of possibilities around conversations. An intriguing look at an America that's similar enough to our own to be pretty darned chilling.

I have such nostalgia goggles for this book.

The premise is so interesting. Some of it was reallllly slow. But I appreciate that the author didn’t shy away from the violence that can be caused be a government with the children’s deaths at the end. And Luke’s turmoil was heartbreaking.
