I was given this book as a gift, and I wasn't sure whether it would be my thing at all. I'd seen the Jeff Bridges film and enjoyed it, but didn't remember much about it. In fact, I really enjoyed the book, particularly the audiobook, which is read brilliantly (and unexpectedly) by Donna Tartt. Mattie Ross is such a great protagonist, along the lines of Scout Finch, bullying and cajoling and bribing her way towards justice for her father. The naive narration (even though it's narrated by her older self, it still feels like a naive outlook) is endlessly funny, and the characters are surprisingly endearing. It was a quick read but it made a big impression for me.

Great fun. What a cheeky young lady the narrator is! Short, simple, punchy writing, with all the character and goofiness needed to make the classic story full of interesting added flavour.
