I enjoyed both movie versions of this, and finally got around to reading the book. It’s worth a read no matter how many times you’ve seen the movies.

Simply put, this is the best Western ever written. The is told by a 14-year old girl, Mattie Ross, who is pretentious, cocky, fearless, headstrong, and blunt. Talk about a strong female character. She writing the story 50 years later and looking back at herself and her adventures. The main plot centers on Mattie's journey to avenge her father's death. There have been two film adaptation which are both quite good, but the book is better -- more nuanced, dryer humor, and focused on Mattie rather than Rooster Cogburn. Bonus points here for Donna Tartt's exceptional narration and her closing essay on the importance of this novel to her and to members of her family. A fantastic read and a fantastic listen of an all-time favorite.

Mattie Ross may be one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read. While she may be 14 years old, she is the definition of true grit.

I’ll update more on this review later.

“Most girls like play pretties, but you like guns, don’t you?”

“I don’t care a thing in the world about guns. If I did I would have one that worked.”

i’d written out an entire (essay disguised as a) review for this book, but i deleted it by accident. Though I think this quote sums my thoughts up perfectly, so do with that what you will.
Also, I have a crush on La Boeuf.
