Some weird bits and a bit of an anti-climax (and a last sentence I think bungles the themes of the novel), but has some amazing imagery and concepts that stuck with me far more than expected. 4 stars, left an impact.

For a book first published in the early 1990s, I felt this story held up extremely well. It was a SF mystery -- what happened on this ship? What *is* happening? I didn't love the epilogue, but otherwise this was well executed and a fun read.

hated the mc, he literally didn't question anything it was so annoying. I am weak and could not handle it

The dark beyond the stars was a solid DNF for me. It’s a generation ship story: humans on a spaceship looking for alien life for hundreds of years. It’s very YA, which isn’t bad on itself. What threw me off was the pacing. Pages and pages of repetetive teenage angst, and when it finally came to an exciting incident, the book went over it in 1 or 2 paragraphs. I got to page 200 and decided that this just wasn’t for me.

Characters ranging from frustrating to insufferable, poor writing that broke my immersion, and eventually, societal ideals of a condescending old man.

Does not belong on the queer scifi lists. The protag is pretty definitely straight, and has one hookup with a guy that is maybe a sentence.

Very disappointing.

An overly long and tedious generation ship story which gets too bogged down in the ship's internal politics between cardboard cut-out characters, and then ends precisely at the point when it might have become interesting.
