I really wanted to like this book - the story was cool, it was well-developed and clever, but man was it problematic. I'm just going to tag the rest of my review for spoilers, since it's all pretty spoiler-y, but mostly I'm just diving into various things that strike me as pretty jarringly problematic.

Firstly, we have another lovely case of a queer character attempting suicide as a result of their sexuality. Sure, she doesn't succeed, but she then buries her true sexuality and marries a man. She does eventually get a better ending, but I don't really think that this was needed. It didn't actually add a whole lot.

Second, all the female characters seemed to do was be miserable. Every woman had something (or multiple) horrible things happen, and honestly not really in a horror way, just in a sad way. Abuse, assault, family trauma, etc. and the only real purpose was to give Noah a plot.

Finally, the whole story is basically one about grooming - that's what the plot really comes down to, and it's never really addressed in terms of how horrific it is. I agree with other reviewers that if Noah had been a female character being groomed, people would have been much more upset, but Hamill gets away with it because Noah is a boy.

Going into this I really thought that I might come out of it as a book that I could use as an alternative when people recommend House of Leaves , but while this book has a much better plot, there are just so many things that gave me bad vibes that I don't think I'll be recommending it...

I really liked this book and the writing. However, DEFINITELY check out the content warnings section. There's a lot to be cautious of.

For the Hamill's first novel, this was great. I read this book without fully reading the summary, so that was a big ride to go through. I had no idea where things would go. Throughout the book I felt tense, literally shaken, happy, and like I was going to cry. I enjoyed the smooth transitions from section to section, chapter to chapter, and year to year.  Eunice is also a character I related to so much it made finishing the book painful at times. I'm not happy with how some characters ended up, but I'm fine with it. It's a book that feels very realistic with how not everything can be wrapped up in a neat and tidy bow, which makes me more sad than disappointed.

Usually I don't reread books, but I can see myself rereading/skimming through to see what I missed.
