The book follows Michael and Susan as their relationship slowly dissolves to susan becoming distant and wishing to be released from Michael, and Michael going from uninterested repulsion to obsession and eventual madness. Paul sayer throughout the book builds tension and adds layers of normality and complexion to the two POVS which results in a tense stand off between the two characters and an ultimately disturbing and tense novel.
