The parts about being trans are great. The haunted part? Meh. Not so much

one of the most incredible memoirs I've ever read. the last five pages of this book are so strong, so vulnerable, so honest in their delivery and conception that it left me with shaking hands. I've read a lot of books on the trans experience and have also lived through my own life as a non-binary queer individual but Jennifer's approach of weaving the narrative of growing up as a child in a haunted home and as a trans person growing in a haunted body made me rethink so much. It takes a special person to write a book about their life that is both tragic and hilarious, inspired but grounded, and vulnerable without oversharing. As a child I loved ghost stories because I felt like a ghost in myself, and as an adult I felt touched to see that concept so beautiful poured out into something so good that I have been thinking about it for a week straight. I cannot recommend this enough.

Charming in its way, but not thoroughly satisfying. Boylan introduces a number of threads and hints throughout that are not tied together as the story progresses, but instead disappoint toward the end. Emotionally mild for a book of this subject matter. The author lets the reader do a lot of work, but I wanted her to offer more in return. As a result, the book felt lightweight.

I was really taken with this one after some initial hesitation--a little indulgent over-writing early on almost scared me off. I kept looking forward to getting back to it and found the author's voice really appealing. Her treatment of the ghost/haunted house she grew up in felt right, too. I was willing to suspend my disbelief since she showed a little cynicism herself.

I didn't realize the author of this memoir was transgendered when I started it...and I ended up surprised by how that unusual twist wasn't the book's focus (I believe it *was* the focus of She's Not There, another of her books).
