i really enjoyed the longer stories in this book where a strange and weird world could be fleshed out. i struggled more with the abstract shorter stories because i wanted more! i think this would be a really great book to dissect in a college creative writing class—particularly the very last story in the book.

i liked picking up this book to read a few stories in between my larger series reads over the last six months. i think my favorites were “the circus wagon”, “another country doctor”, and “they shall flourish and spread” (with honorable mentions to “a salmon tale 2072”, “immigrant”, and “unfinished painting of empty classroom”)

my signed copy has a drawing of a bat which i also like very much 🦇
