Douglas was severely depressed when he wrote this installation of the series and it shows. The universe has become greatly misanthropic; Fenchurch is disappeared to make Arthur miserable; the spirit of Industrial capitalism overtakes the Guide; and it ends with everyone dying (Douglas later admitted he regretted this ending, but unfortunately passed before he could write another installation).
There are still some heartwarming moments (Ford listening to <Elvis> performing at a bar is one of them) and Random's predicament does add at least some stakes to the story.
Zaphod is missing from the roster, so a fair amount of the comedic relief had been lost.
Overall it's not horrible. A Hitchhikers' Guide book is still a Hitchhikers' Guide book (the tongue in cheek heart of the series can still be found amongst the misery in scenes like the self-help planet). It's relic of a rough spot for the author.
