If I can convince you to read one little known book, this would be it. Motion Sickness if a vibey book with no plot at all- it’s just stream of consciousness, an inner look into the psyche of a lost soul. Our narrator is travelling all over Europe, meeting interesting people and letting them dictate her next destination, either by attraction or repulsion. As she travels and mingles with them, she reflects upon her state of mind, her surroundings acting as an inspiration and a fascinating backdrop for the reader.

This book starts so strong from page one, when the protagonist is in bed nursing an imaginary illness. The way she just cruises through life with both ease and paralysing neuroticism is so fun to read. I absolutely loved the utterly quotable passages in which she talks about love, grief, belonging, feeling lost. One key theme is memory. She is so conscious of how she’s making new memories every day, while retaining a strong attachment to the ones she already has. It says a lot about what makes a person, especially one that has no roots by choice. It asks big questions about interpersonal relations and their meaning, their purpose. But it’s never heavy. If anything, it’s extremely poetic.

I suppose I related to a lot of the central themes, which may be why I liked it so much. But if you like anything that is heavily inspired by Virginia Woolf, only for the 1990s, this is pretty much perfect.
