i read this for the BBF bookclub im a part of and really had to force myself to finish. The writing style is definitely as old as the publication year suggests and the wording difficult to understand with long sentences and lots of references to other literature.

Its definitely the opposite of my tea. Hard to read, unlikeable characters, rather old and unbending worldview with some sexism, racism and classism sprinkled here and there. Overall a pain in the ass.

But the philosophical aspect did intrigue me, moral differences aside this is a philosophical experiment and it does serve that purpose well. I had an especially hard time in the beginning, but once I lowered my expectations and no longer tried to feel anything but contempt for the main characters I still thought it a chore to get through, but no longer had the growing urge to throw the book at the wall, drown it and light it on fire.

Im sure my opinion is bound to change after our bookclub meeting, but I wanted to note my first impression of it.

I’m really not sure what to rate this book. It was undeniably good, and the context in which it was written and what is has to say about that society is fascinating. From a modern perspective, not much happened in the book and there were a lot of statements characters gave that I disagreed with- lord Henry wonton seemed awfully full of himself. But keeping in mind the context, it was an excellent read.

classic literature checklist: racism✔️, classism✔️, misogyny✔️, antisemitism✔️

ignoring the blatant prejudices, this book was captivating in ways i didn’t expect whatsoever. at first, i was like damn they yap a lot, but then we got to the painting and dorian’s loss of innocence and spiral into insanity and i was like hell ya. anyway, pretty good book and vibes. 4 stars
