4.5/5 - i was hearing nothing but great things about this book, and it was just as amazing as everyone says it is. it reminded me of how much i love short stories, this one was so impactful as many short stories are, but this will definitely stay on my mind for a while. i rated 4.5 out of 5 at first because the beginning/set up was a tad slow, but i changed as it sat with me more.
about the story: it’s based on historical events that occurred in ireland. this short story asks us to examine our complicity with institutions that have raised or influenced us greatly. although i’m not religious by any means, it was very hard hitting and forced the reader to be introspective on their values: do they connect to the actions we choose to take? and how easily complicit can we be when the issue does not affect us directly? even when seeing the issue at hand, how comfortable are we to not only be complicit actionably, but maneuver our thinking to further validate ourselves?
i love when authors are able to write a story about a piece of history that has been erased because of these incredibly powerful and influential institutions, and finally give a voice to the victims. it didn’t occur to me it was based on a true story until the end’s note on the text which is why i wanted to make a specific note on that.
i would recommend to anyone wanting to read a short story!
