Interesting! I understand why novels tend to be longer than 114 pages! Haha I found myself wishing there was more to the story. For such a short book, it was well encapsulated, but I felt the desire for a deeper emotional connection for such a heavy topic. Instead, it felt that it was introduced quickly and ended abruptly.

The Secret Daughter by Kelly Rimmer is based off a similar concept (I won’t share to avoid spoilers!). If I didn’t already know this took place in history from The Secret Daughter, I would’ve been very confused reading the book.

Going with a 3.5/5!

Good things come in small packages. This short novel captures the life of a husband and father making his way through a troubling economic time in Ireland. His upbringing influenced his kind nature, something the whole community recognizes.  This might explain how the community acts in the final scene of the story, acceptance without stern judgement.  The book also throws the spotlight on the horrible conditions that young unwed mothers were subjected to by the Catholic Church.

This book is about catholic homes for unwed mothers that were work houses in Ireland. One townsman rescued one of the girls rather than ignore her plight.

A very short read that resonates, echoes, quietly screams that little bit of kindness can create ripples of joy and life for many years. My first Claire Keegan, not gonna lie I had to read a little bit about how the author designs her books before some pieces landed for me. I'll definitely pick up some of her writing after this.
