Dead Silence

S.A. Barnes

I definitely agree with a fellow book friend that this book gives ghost ship vibes. I absolutely loved the movie ghost ship growing up. I listened to the audiobook and it actually had my heart pumping in a lot of parts.

Space horror and mysterious derelict vessels are some of my favorite things. Dead Silence is at its best when the protagonists are exploring dark corridors and trying to piece together the events. It dallies a little too long in the psyche of the main character at almost every turn but otherwise delivers a satisfying answer to its own mystery and a surprising second act, though some of the events don't follow logical protocol. With a little tightening up, Barne's novel would be an excellent thriller. I still enjoyed it, and would probably recommend it to genre enthusiasts but not casual readers.

The audiobook narrator is very talented, but sounds constantly near tears for the entirety-something that doesn't help the drama if the emotions are at 11/10 for the duration.

This is a pretty solid horror murder mystery, like something you might've seen on the Sci-Fi channel way back in the 90s when you were taking a sick day. I admittedly lost the explanation of what was going on towards the end of the book, but if we're going for the slightly delirious sick day experience, it lines up perfectly. This was a fun library borrow, and I'm definitely interested in more in the future from this author.

- classic case of an unreliable narrator: she knows she has a history of seeing things; part way through the book she just accepts she can see ghosts?? = annoying
- also kind of wanted to know more about the childhood trauma of being a lone survivor?
- the structure of the book was annoying, there until starts getting loopy, then Amnesia so ‘we must return’... eh. big decrease of tension there at the midpoint
- Kane was very conveniently going catatonic and magically recovers; the business guy conveniently goes mad in 2 seconds
- never got a great read on Max, therefore I did not feel betrayed when he was BBEG
- almost would have preferred a supernatural cause (over ‘device’)
- was scary / had tense moments, but was generally annoying to me
- Ben said it sounded creepily like the video game Dead Space
- it definitely felt High stakes, claustrophobic, creepy; the atmosphere was 10 out of 10
- the romance felt pointless, the shift to corporate politics was a bad decision imho
- was creepy and had my heart rate up a couple of times, more the jump scare type
- Claire even had ‘visions’ of the past? Psychic?? = weird
- some reviewers say this is ‘not a horror book’, but it felt like one to me? it was a thriller with horror elements set in space?

3.5 stars

Haunted space ship romance? I didn’t care about any of the characters, especially not the main character. I was not scared or creeped out or grossed out once. I have no idea how this is labeled as a horror novel.

There was BARELY any world building; the closest thing to world building we got was that paper and trees and ink pens are rare and rattlesnakes are extinct. Yet, horrifically, influencers and vloggers still exist. And the whole Mars-colony-disease was never explained so I also didn’t care that her mom was dead.

Small spoilers.

Why can’t Kane nor Claire remember the MOST important part of her being found/rescued? How did Kane survive for two months? I feel like just “not remembering” was lazy storytelling. And what WAS the “weapon”? What did it do exactly? Were the ghosts real or not? Why did some people see the same ghosts? Why were most people only given a last name? Why did Kane say “it…eats and chews and devours”? Why is Claire’s mother only seen in dangerous situations? So many plot holes. I’m frustrated and beyond confused.

AND IT WASN’T SILENT ONCE!!
