I love Space Horror!

This book was pretty frightening

Fun read, 3.5 rounded up to 4. Would be a 4 if the lead character didnt the half that wasn't losing her mind pining over a dude.

HUGE fan! Love a horror set in space and loved the light romance aspect. I just wish the cause of the stuff that made people go crazy was an evil entity or some alien object, not technology. And the ghost aspect of it was a little meh. But overall, well written and very spooky

So…I picked this one up on a whim from the library specifically because it was labeled as “Titanic meets The Shining” (two movies I absolutely love) and y’all this was not that. This was still a decent debut sci-fi psychological thriller with some horror aspects thrown in.

Claire Kovalik and her space salvage crew are on their last stretch home that is until they get a distress signal and decide to go off for one more. The signal is coming from none other than the infamous Aurora luxury space liner that disappeared only 6 months after their initial voyage over 20 years ago. Soon they realize things are not right on the Aurora and fight to determine what really happened on the Aurora before they suffer a fate similar.

I get the similarity here with Titanic being a luxury liner but we know what happened to Titanic and it vanished like that. To me this was more like Ghost Ship meets Event Horizon. I’m pretty sure my experience for this one was hindered by that.

I was not a huge fan of the characters. Claire could’ve been more interesting if she wasn’t so annoying. I understand she was going through some things (PTSD and such) and I can appreciate an unreliable and unlikable character but maybe the audio made her seem more annoying than the author meant. Nevertheless I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. I’ve said before an audio can make or break it for me.

This was a fairly quick book but the plot was lacking in bringing about the right sense of tension and dread for me and the ending was a bit lackluster though we did finally get some answers so I can at least appreciate that. I did blaze through the audio but I kept waiting for this big reveal that I felt never came. The writing was good and I could totally see this book as a movie. Overall this was an ok book. I may give this one another chance at a later date but I am interested to see what else this author writes.

3.5 stars

I hesitated when getting this as it is sci-fi and I'm mostly a thriller and fantasy reader.

This was very well written and in a way that was easy for me to follow. The world building was done in a way that wasn't a giant info-dump you have to slog through (thank you!).

The characters were flawed and felt like real people.

The story was excellent. It very much had the atmosphere of the earlier Alien movies mixed with a hefty dose of Event Horizon.
