I was going to give this 3 stars but that would mean I liked it when it was really just ok. Dead Silence reminds me of Aliens: Romulus but I liked that better. Dead Silence is Aliens: Romulus light and the characters really grated on my nerves. There is way too much hostility going on, except the shmaltzy romance between Claire and Kane. There are a couple good horror scenes on the ship but I was really disappointed by what was behind the horror. The lead, Claire, was also annoying with her constant self-victimizing. The positives are the books isn't boring (at times it is tedious) and there are some interesting things about the ship they find. I also liked shipmate, Nysus, I think I would have liked him telling the story more than Claire.

Haunted Space Titanic? Yes please. I was absolutely invested in this story from beginning to end.
Pros
🪐 Great horror use. Ghosts, hallucinations, madness - all portrayed concisely and emotionally.
🪐 So atmospheric, it's easy to imagine yourself in the vastness of space, the derelict ship, I loved it.
🪐 MC is both strong and flawed. She feels like a real person.
Cons
🪐 Not the cosmic horror I was expecting, but it was still great.
🪐 I only wished for a bit more in the epilogue but that's just because I'm nosey and like more than simple bowtie endings.

No frills review: A space horror that felt predictable and missed the mark on building tension that inevitably didn't pay off. The romance subplot felt completely unnecessary. It seems to try to capitalise on the payoff of a slow burn, but with the building coming in the months/years before the book even started. We're told that, but I didn't feel it in the characters.

I might have appreciated this more if this had been marketed as a psychological thriller with romance instead of horror. It was creepy, but I was expecting more monsters or aliens or "unspeakable horrors," like the cover suggests. I was intrigued enough to finish, but I didn't vibe well with the protagonist.
