Eh. I don't think it lived up to the hype. It reminded me of her "Girl on the Train" Many characters and switching back and forth between them every chapter. I liked it, I liked the ending, but it was tiresome at times.
Was it good? Yes.
Was it great? Not necessarily.

Unenjoyable characters and a few too many, but there’s a handy list to flip to at the start of the book. Overall it kept me guessing even when I thought I had it figured out and was interesting enough halfway through to keep me going; I’d recommend. 3.75 stars.
I listened to the audio book and was in suspense....all the way to the last cd. Then pfftt. It ran out of gas to me as soon as an arrest was made.
Side note-there were a lot of characters to keep track of.

It was hard to read at times because the various story lines are so sad but the ending is a shocker. Ms Hawkins can really weave a tale.
3.5 stars rounded up. Oh, there are just too many unreliable narrators in this story. And story threads about The Drowning Pool that are never answered. Doesn't quite meet the level of intrigue as The girl on the Train. There is plenty of suspense and thrill, though. There are just too many narrators, though, unreliable or no.
I had high hopes for this book based on my love for Girl on the Train. But with 9+ character POV’s it was honestly hard to get invested in the actual story. I didn’t even LOVE any of the characters – the plot was dark and had potential however!
Bit of a let-down. The plot was pretty predictable...I figured out what happened before I was even halfway done with the book. The characters were unsympathetic and tedious; character development was tepid at best. While switching narrators can be effective in many cases, it didn't work well in this book. Too many unpleasant, boring people.
There were certain parts of the book that were enjoyable, such as the historical parts/excerpts from
Nel's books. The quality of writing was pretty good as well. So, overall, I am not quite ready to write off this author (unintended pun) for now.

Even though I thought I knew who did it, Hawkins added just enough twists and turns to keep me second guessing; I actually enjoyed this more than Girl on the Train.
I actually enjoyed this one more than Ms. Hawkins previous - THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. Great summer read - which I consumed in one day.
