Such a cute first volume! I'm excited to see where the story goes. I can't wait to eat volume two!

This one was kind of strange--I think a lot of the humor might have suffered for being translated from Japanese into English. The story also veered wildly from interacting with Hinana as a typical, focused high school girl to Kaede being I don't know what. I also didn't love Hinana framing herself as better/smarter/more than the other girls in her school because she spends all her time studying and only thinks about romance in secret.
Kaede is fairly odious--deliberately so--and I wonder if he is going to continue being the only love interest of if Hinana's childhood friend is going to give him a run for his money. It's hard to say because they first volume was pretty short. Only three chapters.
The artwork is pretty standard manga fair and I like the way the panels are laid out and how they interplay with text overlays. The pieces are cute but they don't quite gel into anything substantive here.
If I can find these at my library I may continue with the series, but if not I can easily walk away. For shojo manga I enjoyed Waiting for Spring a lot more and think Skip Beat might be a more substantive alternative.

Uh... um... this was a strange experience.
So, the art, the bits of comedy, and the reality of it are great. The storytelling flows well, and it is really readable and engaging. You kinda just can't stop reading it. That's why I gave it 3☆.
Now, why it's a 3☆ under duress is because some parts of the premise and comedy are just... not good.
This is the story of Hinana, a high schooler known for her seriousness, who in all actuality just wants a fairytale romance with a hot guy. Enter Ayase, a boy band dropout with a massively successful turn into acting and modeling. When his movie is shooting at her school, Hinana discovers... that he has a butt fetish and thinks high school girls' butts, like Hinana's, are perfectly plump. Hinana later finds his other kind gestures sweet and princely and develops a crush on him.
Now, I want to point out that the plump comment was straight from the 24-year-old dude's mouth! And she and others think he is twisted and weird, but just let it go. WHEN HE IS PEEKING AT HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' ASSES. JAPAN, I GET THAT YOU NEED NEW, ORIGINAL TWISTS OF CERTAIN PREMISES BEFORE YOU UNLOAD THE SHOUJO TROPES ON US, BUT PLEASE. And, yes, I get that Japan has different views on ages of adulthood and stuff, but like, even the characters in the manga are grossed out by this!!! Like I really hate this objectification/fetish/whatever, but, if he was at least a high school age then it wouldn't be additional levels of wrong.
It's clearly meant as a "See! Even this prince of a celebrity has imperfections and does odd things just like us!" But it's like they try to balance his extreme princeliness with extreme oddity and depravity. And... they didn't have to? You can just write a normal character flaw? He actually has realistic character flaws and conflicts, so why did they even need to include this? I can only think of comedy as their reasoning, but is this really funny? Like in actuality?
This review I realize is just becoming a critique on Shoujo manga's approach to new, original stories. A manga like this is not unusual in today's Shoujo manga. So many new Shoujo manga are trying to keep the same base premises and characters while punching the edginess and extremity of some aspects into overdrive, when all you need is good characters and more thoughtful approaches to cliches, tropes, and expectations. That's probably why I have started and stopped a number of Shoujo manga after the first volume these last few years. Hinana in this manga has the foundation to be the type of character I am saying that we need, but her love interest leaves much to be desired.
3☆ If you aren't bothered by a 24-year-old and a high schooler getting together and the dude having a butt fetish, then you'll probably enjoy this!
