This book is absolutely fantastic, and it’s all the more impressive once you find it that the author wrote it as his senior thesis project in College. I bought a copy of this book after reading Lovecraft Country by the same author, and I think I like this one even more.

While the plot is good, what made me really enjoy this book was the sheer force of storytelling behind it. Matt Ruff knows how to spin a good yarn with ease in a way that makes a voluminous book enrapturing from start to finish. There are a diverse array of characters, from members of a Tolkien fraternity, complete with an underground rendition of the woods of Lothlorien; there are talking dogs and cats, a group of sprites who live on campus and all have Shakespearian names, and an eclectic group of Bohemian students who kick ass and ride horses through Cornell. Despite the numerous characters, you end up loving each and every one. At the heart of the story is a mythical force who’s changing fate to suit his own whims, slowly bringing everyone together into a struggle against an ancient enemy. Here there be dragons, and an evil mannequin out for blood. If you like a good tale with a fine sprinkling of the fantastical, don’t miss this one!

I was so nervous to read this because someone very important recommended it. But it was so good. So lovely and sweet and funny and romantic and strange and mostly I was just angry when it was over because this is a world I totally want to live in.

I found myself, at times, wishing the story would hurry up and end. I thought the Sprite subplot was unnecessary and detracted from the overall cohesive flow of the story.

This is a very cute book. Some good humour some nice stories. But the pace was not to my taste at the current time. I think it is one of these books that you need to find in some mood. I did loved Lovecraft Country! I'll try some of his later books.

Gave up at around 70%.
Started out really interesting with lots of seemingly sepatate stories; but they would just suddenly become boring. All of them. Lots of characters, and even new ones popping up at this late, i just got tired of them all.

I've enjoyed other books by Matt Ruff, but this was not his best work. It was just ok. And Ruff is wrong about Utica Club beer. As pale lagers go, it's quite good.
