This book seriously made me feel like I was wrapped in a warm hug.
•
The love between Peter (the boy) and Pax (his fox) is so beautiful and true and real. While there are many beautiful books written about children and their pets, I love how this one alternates between Peter and Pax’s perspective. Pax’s perspective adds A LOT to the story, and Pax being a wild animal is really unique to this particular story.
•
While the bond between Peter and Pax is central to the story, this book also explores some big topics—family, love, loyalty, values, identity, and war. This story could lead to some great discussions between kids as they work to build their own understanding of these major themes.
•
I absolutely adored Vola’s character. She is flawed, but she is such a gift to Peter and is able to teach him (and us!) so much.
•
I know the ending bothered some people in that it was ambiguous and felt like some things were left unfinished. This didn’t bother me as much because I knew going in that there was already a sequel written. I may have felt differently had I read this one when it initially came out.

I thought this story would be one of my favorites, but we diverged. It is not a bad story that people should avoid. It has a really clever message, it's well-written, but I don't quite believe that Peter would sit by a woman like that (not really voluntarily, easy now, just broke a bone in his foot) and no one would look, despite the letters? The boy's storyline didn't sit well with me, as showing Pax's new reality is to be believed. Complicated.

Honestly such a nice read! It's technically a children's book but didn't really feel like it, as it handled several deep and important themes, though that was made very intelligently. The book was both heavy and light, sad but hopeful. Looking forward to reading the sequel!
