Paolini is a great storyteller. If you've read Eragon, then you know what I'm talking about. While this book is completely different than that dragon fantasy series, the storytelling skill remains. This book is long! But I was never bored, and every part belonged in the story. In fact, the story builds dramatically in scope, but never loses the reader.

Quick summary: Kira Navarez accidentally discovers alien tech that bonds with her in an irreversible way. Violence and chaos abound while she struggles to control it. Meanwhile, aliens invade human settled space. War and destruction is everywhere. Can Kira and her ragtag new crew save the galaxy?

Though the story does not focus on much inner dialogue, I understood the characters. Nearly each and every one formed a solid image in my mind. In fact, the book was quite visual—an immersive read.

Paolini spends a lot of pages in the appendix to prove his hard science chops, but I have to say this is a soft sci-fi book. Ultimately, it comes down to good vs. evil, creation vs. chaos, love vs. fear. And even with the inter-stellar space mechanics explained, you have an inexplicable "magic" suit doing "magic" things (wand included!).

I really enjoyed the first 80% of the book. Just the set up
how she got the suit and meeting the new crew etc
was well done, not too info dumpy or sciency at once. The last 20%
the war
was quite rough, it felt slow and it got to the point where I wanted it to end. I think the very last part
some of her still surviving very far away
was a good set up for the next book but it took a long time.

They book seemed like it never stopped with the action once it started. The characters were pretty predictable and the plot wasn't very driven. The ending was satisfying though which was nice.

A good book with a strong, if not fairly template, story and good character development. Could certainly have been half the length of what it actually is.
