This was an interesting book and Paolini did a good job trying to write a space epic. There is plenty of action, story development, and a diverse cast of characters who are fun to follow. That being said, I did feel like the book dragged on longer than it needed to, and there was something about the story that just didn't click with me like I hoped.

Paolini has long been a favorite author, and this new sci-fi is reminiscent of the epic structure of the Inheritance Cycle. I love the characters, the setting, the play of the reader's expectation and the use of space opera themes. Absolutely worth the read.
My one complaint is with the ending. It feels like the Soft Blade is a deus ex machina within this Fractalverse, and I'm not sure where Paolini will go in the next book. I also fear that the crew of the Wallfish will be left behind.

This book was much better than I expected (I didn't enjoy Eragon) but jeez was it long. I'm not one to shy away from large books but several of the top reviews mention stopping around 50-60% and I was exhausted by the time I got there. I didn't feel like the book was needlessly long if that makes sense, like I enjoyed the content it was just a journey.
In terms of content, it's a first contact alien story with a humankind that has spread out from Earth. There was a lot of neat tech babble that I really enjoyed
I did some googling and in Oct. 2020 there was a movie planned for this book, I'll probably go see it if it ever comes out!
