Solid- a good twist that genuinely got me. The only reason I rolled my eyes every few pages is because I just don't think politics work like that. I mean I'm sure they do on some level but I was trying to imagine Bernie Sanders using a fixer and it felt ridiculous. If you suspend your disbelief or believe, it's a good time.

FREAKING AMAZING!

Critically
Plot – 4.5 out of 5 stars
I thought these books could not get any better but I was totally wrong! The first book was intense but this just blew it out of the water. It’s action packed, intense, emotional, powerful and full of twists and turns and high stakes. There’s so much suspense and secrets and violence and you know never what the next page will bring. I thought I had things figured out but there are always new revelations and betrayals that you NEVER see coming. AND I WANT MORE!

Writing Style – 4 out of 5 stars
I am such a huge fan of the writing style for these books because it definitely lends well to the plot. It’s intricate but completely honest and outright. It’s fast paced and intense and it’s totally addicting and easy to fly to. I was so completely engaged into the story thanks to the writing style. Even with the dire situations, there was still humor and lighthearted moments which I really appreciated.

Characters – 5 out of 5 stars
I don’t think I could possibly fall in love with these characters more than I have from this book. They’re all special and complex and flawed and intense. Tess is amazing. She’s fierce and determined and selfless. She literally puts her life on the life for the people she loves in this book and I was in awe of her. Her character development through the series is so intense and extensive, I admired her. She’s cunning and intelligent and powerful. I want to know more about her life after the events of this book. The side characters are also completely awesome, I swear the entire cast is just so intricate. Emilia is a character that gets more of a spotlight in this book and she’s a freaking badass. I want to know more about her. Asher is a precious little cinnamon roll who owns my heart with his wit and humor and love. Vivvie is so sweet and honest, I almost want to say that she’s too innocent for this kind of book but she brings such a light to the story. Ivy has won me over. She’s so amazing and I love how hard she works to create a relationship with Tess. And then there’s Henry who just broke my heart.

Emotionally
SpoilerIf I thought the first book was amazing, it has absolutely nothing on how great this second book was!

The plot is intense. We follow Tess, whose life has turned completely upside down after the events of the first book and things just seem to be getting heavier and heavier. The events from the first book are continued on with this book but with so many new threads and players in the constant game for power that this book describes. What started off as a class election becomes the death a student then becomes a mass scale hostage situation and it turns into a conspiracy theory flipped upside down. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this book. I could never anticipate what was going to happen next or how things would ever get resolved. There are so many jaw dropping, unbelievable twists and turns that just kept coming and coming. It was outrageous! And so well planned because it keeps the reader engaged enough to continue to read but not overwhelmed with so many changes. There’s such a struggle throughout the book for the main character. You definitely feel for her and the hardships she’s going through. I wanted everyone and everything to just be okay and everyone to be happy, but like in real life, that’s not always the case. Just when you think things are calm, the ending leaves the reader with more questions and the desire for more. I don’t know if there’s going to be another book though I sincerely hope so because I will beg and plead for more of this craziness.

I love Tess as a main character. She’s a heroine through and through but she’s not stereotypical in any way. She’s kindhearted and determined and honorable but she’s no perfect. She’s developed really well, she feels like a real person and her struggles feel real, her relationships feel real but she’s also flawed. She’s prideful and stubborn and a bigger martyr than she should be. She throws herself into dangerous situations without regard for her own safety but it just made me love her even more. She knows who she is and what matters to her and will do anything to make sure the people she loves are safe.

Besides Tess, I’m a huge fan of the side characters. They definitely liven up the story and create more drama but the relationships are so intense and complex. One of the characters that gets more of a spotlight in this book is Emilia. We meet her in the first book but she doesn’t really make that big of an impact until we reach this book. She is such a badass! She’s still aloof but we get to see more of her vulnerability and her bravery. She may not ever be my favorite character but she’s intriguing and I’d love to see what makes her tick. Vivvie and Asher now have a very hilarious dynamic and are the light that shines with all the darkness of this book. They bring the humor to an otherwise dark story and I love them. Henry broke my heart and I still can’t talk about it without wanting to cry my eyes out so that’s all I’m going to say. I love how the relationship between Ivy and Tess is developing. After so much bad blood and trauma and drama between them, it almost seemed like it would be impossible for them to connect the way they should be but this book proved me wrong. Slowly but surely, they’re letting down their guards and letting the other into their hearts and sharing how they feel. It was just so beautiful to see them connect and it made me so happy! Then there’s a huge reveal at the end that honestly blew my brains out. Like what the hell is happening?! And then it just ended! I NEED TO KNOW MORE. Give me another book please!

Overall, I love this book and this series. The plot is intense and exciting and always keeps you on the edge of your seat. You never know what’s going to happen next or who to trust. The characters are all well developed, flawed and their relationships are intriguing and mind blowing. Tess as a main character is amazing and badass and one of my favorites. Those last few chapters were really intense and I really want another book to know more about what will happen next!
