Good story but not as fast-paced and exciting as Instruments of Darkness.
I really, really needed a recap of Book #1 ([b:Instruments of Darkness|8799787|Instruments of Darkness (Crowther and Westerman, #1)|Imogen Robertson|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347727787s/8799787.jpg|6258894]). Because I had no memory who some of these people were. I finished this book and I still am not sure who everyone is – there was Lady Susan, who I think was a child who was…lost? Or hidden? Or something? And connected to the last murder victim? And that other guy was her guardian? You know what, no, I have no idea who anyone besides Crowther and Westermen were. Which was bad, because that means I was confused a lot.
I do remember really loving the first book and I know this one was a little weaker. But this is still the best historical mystery series I've read and there were some really great scenes - particularly when Crowther accuses Westerman of just pretending to be concerned about her sick husband and she gives him a hardcore verbal smackdown.

Hadn't read the first in the series but this excellent book stands alone
I love this series and am very glad that I am reading them. The relationship between the two main characters is one of the best I have read. The mysteries and twists are engaging, and can keep you guessing to the very end, but I think, the chemistry between Harriett and Crowther is what keeps me coming back for more. Book #3 rests happily in my bookcase.
I have to admit that while reading this book I felt as if I was watching a CSI episode. One that move extremely slow but was intrigued enough were I could not could not change the channel. I ended this book not only wanting to read the rest of the series, but the suggested books in the historical notes as well.

Not as captivating or believable as the first one. The soy/opera drama, and the dramatic turn of events involving the captain, were at times a stretch. Still interested in reading more of the series.
Loved it. A good complicated murder mystery mixed with history set in 1781 London. Filled with a cast of memorable characters and plot twists. It was an enjoyable read
