This was the perfect accompaniment for my work commute. Listening to it at double speed meant I got it finished just as I pulled up outside my home. It was also charming enough to keep me engaged and familiar enough (the bumbling country cops somehow manages to solve the case and reveal it as all suspects are gathered together) that I didn't really need to think too much about the story. Plus the narrator is a dream to listen to.

I had to check when this was written because the amount of inappropriate and outdated terms and ideas was off-putting.
I wanted to like it, but there's a lot about it that's really problematic, like using sexual assault as a character quirk (like seriously, WTF?!).
The characters are barely defined, and the female characters are especially horrible in how they are nothing more than every worse caricature imaginable.
I can't believe that this book is by the same author who wrote the Agatha Raisin books.

I binge read the Agatha Raisin series, but I’m not a fan of this one. I am not going to keep reading this series.
Entertaining. Very light. I would have liked a more fleshed-out version.
Delightful little who done it, with equally delightful characters. This is the first in the Hamish MacBeth stories - the local highlander cop. This case involves a fishing school and, what else, a gossip.
It's unusual how deep into the book we get before really getting to know its main character and then getting his POV.
I do adore Beaton's terse wit and unsparing descriptions but I wish she'd been a little less profuse with fat as a pejorative.
