So glad this ended the way it did.

A very interesting story, it was eerie and intense.
I really like Malorie and I wish things turned out happier for her.

If you've watched the movie and are deciding whether you should read the book: read it. There are things in this book that they could never put into a film, simply because the tension building is just so incredible. There are whole scenes that are completely different, and much more horrific than the movie adaptation. I'm a slow reader, but I finished this pretty quickly, as it is short and amazingly well written.

I finished it in around 24 hours. I genuinely didn't think I'd like it, but the concept and children had me on edge.

I am reeling from this story, possibly because I devoured it in 24 hours which made it quite an immersive experience. Bird Box is in my head.

From the very beginning we are drip-fed a mystery which is never explained or solved. It's a seemingly outlandish scenario which results in clusters of survivors who must stay indoors and forever hide their eyes from what lurks outside. There's a faint sense of the ridiculous, but the fear that gripped the characters, of what cannot be seen or known, was enough to completely engross me. Add to that a desperate, isolated mother raising her children to be constantly afraid and never look outside, and I just could not put it down.

The writing is incredibly clever. With my eyes wide open I felt completely exposed while reading, and the tension that builds slowly throughout the book became a physical sensation for me by the end. I finished the book with clenched fists; every horror that Malorie experiences, she does so through her other senses. What she cannot see she must assume, and the cause of it all remains unknowable. I absolutely loved it.

Holy. Shit. Incredibly well written. Suspense. Mystery. Horror. So many feelings. So many fears. So many questions, most with horrifying answers, and the biggest question still lurking long after you've turned the last page.

I spent 8 hours one day in early December 2019 reading the first half of this book. I couldn't sleep that night and had to put it away for two months. I picked it back up at the end of January 2020 and finished the second half in another 8 hour day. So I like to joke that "I finished it in two days but it took me two months to do it."
