Having already seen the movie, I expected the book to be a slog, and, to be honest, a poorly written slog. But surprise! The writing was fine and there were enough differences with the movie to keep me in some suspense. Now, on to Malorie.

3.5 stars? I've got to think about this one. It was claustrophobic in some sections and then leaves so many questions open... I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. Did you see that movie, The Village? It reminded me of that a little bit.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The fast pace action and suspense keeps you hooked from page one. I can’t recommend this enough.

Preferred the movie (slightly) to the book though neither was outstanding. Book focused more on the protagonist's kids where the movie accelerated the apocalypse and subsequent years.

Neither the book nor the movie really explain how the insanity causing (alien?) creatures would be so ubiquitous that simply opening your eyes outside would be instantly fatal.

And a book set in 2014 should probably realize that GPS devices exist and could be used for navigation.

Holy crap! I read this in a matter of hours like a maniac! I couldn't literally turn the page fast enough!
Totally entrancing with every detail. I can't explain the depth of this book. The imagination to create something like this astounds me!
You will literally be on the edge of your seat, slightly uncomfortable but unable to stop to you reach the unbelievable ending!

  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

A masterclass in the horror of the unseen. The tension that builds as the two timelines hurtle towards each other, especially in the last hundred pages, is palpable. In a story for survival, you want to care whether the characters survive - let me tell you that you will not only care about Malorie, but you will think of her long after the book has finished.

After reading the book I’m now very disappointed with the film!

I loved Gary’s character and his influence and manipulation over Don, the scene in the attic - CREEPY.

I liked that the epidemic ? was explored more in depth over a period of time rather than just a single outbreak day and I liked the ending too despite what others say. Yes it would be good to know what the creatures are but, in a realistic world would you ever find out?

5* from me.
