Great introduction to a new series. I loved the complexity of the caste system - Fie never wastes a moment to remind the Prince and his bodyguard Crows are people, citizens of their country deserving of a decent life without fear as do all.
I also loved the acceptance of Prince Jasimir lack of interested in women - the kingdom looking towards the wealthy male heirs for potential marriage matches.
The growth of the Jasimir and Tavin as royal into compassionate, albeit naïve, is very inspiring. Can people change? Learn empathy for those around them?
Well written, loved the world building.

Ok I absolutely loved reading this book!
I will say that at the beginning it was off to a slower start than I usually like, but boy did I get drawn in.
I really liked the characters throughout and I look forward to each one growing in the sequel. Can I just say how bad ass is Fie. Seriously. Crows may not have a birthright but boy do they have a good gift if they are born witches. I know the term bone thief is bad but I kind of like it. I think Jas can mature in the next book and I look forward to seeing how he progresses. Does he become king and make it to the throne? Now about Fie and Tavin, I always knew they wouldn’t be together after everything that happened. Can they find a way in the second book? Let’s hope so. I was completely enveloped in the world that Margaret Owen created here. I love the way this world came together and I want to read/see more of it.

Now on to The Faithless Hawk. Eee I’m excited.

Getting dumped straight into the story and picking up the world building as you go is a little daunting at the beginning, but the book is worth it. The magic and social system is interesting and is used very effectively to explore social discrimination and violence against people who are looked down on for doing ugly and necessary work in the story's world.

This is my new all time favorite book. I love the dynamics. I love the magic system. I love the plot and actions. It’s also a very action pack book which I love.

still ruminating on how i really feel about this book, so don't be surprised if my rating changes in a few days

amazing world-building and magic system with incredibly complex and motivating characters. i loved fie and how she dealt with the two most privileged and ignorant boys she could ever happen upon. i also love jas and tavin and how complicated their relationship and their backgrounds are. all three of them together was just *chef's kiss*

my main issue with the book had to do with pacing and plot, as it started getting a little grapes of wrath-y towards the 60% mark. there were plenty of exciting scenes, but it felt like we were just running to a point, stopping only to hide for a bit, and then running again for far too long. maybe 75 shaved pages would've saved this book from making me skim some parts lol

overall, i enjoyed this and am interested in picking up the sequel!

I honestly don't know what to think about this book. I bought it on a whim and from reading the back cover it seemed interesting.
Then I started reading it and had to literally force myself to continue because the start was slow and the story didn't make much sense to me at the beginning, not much explanation of the fantasy world and I was feeling quite lost and not interested enough to continue. But because I bought it, I gave the book several changes to get better.
And it did. After like 150 pages, but it did and the story got much more interesting! The slow beginning of a love interest and the danger looming the the shadows (literally), now I'm glad I didn't stop!

In the end, I don't think it deserves 4 stars from me, but 3 is too low. More like 3,5.

I had a hard time deciding a rating on this one but settled on 4. There were aspects of this book that were 5 star worthy; the characters, the plot, the magic system, the dialog writing and quirky, dark but lighthearted humor. But the pacing and dragged out 50-85% of the book just dropped a whole star for me. Chapter after chapter of tension built and I was so tired of it, moments (like literal split second moments of time in their world) that lasted 2 or 3 whole pages of writing because it laid out her every thought 2 or 3 times in different words making me say out loud "okay, I get it, let's get on with it!".
I just can't. I have to dock it a whole star if I feel like "omg, can't we please hit the next step" for like 35% of the book. A vultures finding them time or two could have been left out and cut the journey down by a week, it was too much.
But I did still really really like certain aspects of the story like I said. I will still read the second book even though the ending on this one kind of read like an open end to a standalone, I'm glad there's a second book cause I don't actually want to say goodbye to them completely yet.
And the second book needs more Barf! (That's the cat if you hadn't read lol)
