I found the middle of this book to be quite slow. The beginning was good and the ending really made up for the middle. During the middle, I felt like it dragged and we were going in circles a bit. It was a routine of Poppy fighting with her emotions, threats of stabbings, lots of questions and sex.

I appreciate that many questions about the world were answered but it was a bit boring to have it where Poppy would simply ask and someone would answer.
I love Kieran calling Poppy out and telling her that she’s being ridiculous. I also feel like I was robbed of a threesome scene. They talk about the joining but then it never goes anywhere from there.

The ending was very surprising in a good way and made up for most of my dislikes of the book. I’m excited to read the next one.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! Just overall a fun time. This book had me smiling, laughing, blushing and all giggly which I appreciate.
With said, I wasn't sure about continuing the series as the first book was good but I had some hesitancies (specially with the FMC's inner monologues that went on for ages) but I'm so glad I decided to pick it back up! I gave it that much needed breather beforehand and those inner monologues weren't as rough as they were in bk1.
Is this perfect? Nope, but I felt a connection to this book and the ride was enjoyable. The main trope in this as well..
Engagement/Marriage of Convenience
I am a full sucker for, so, yes.
AND CHAPTER 26! That... just yes. Please say we get to see that play out fully in the future? Ty!

This book also dove more into some of the history of the world, the gods, and info about the different bloodlines. Which I thoroughly enjoyed! Specially the build up to the 'what is' with Poppy.

I will definitely be continuing the series, especially after that ending o_o !! How couldn't I.. I need it!
Safe to say I'm invested now.

While slightly less problematic than the first book in the series, this instalment had other issues. Jennifer L. Armentrout is trying to create an intricate fantasy world, but does so through 'tell' rather than 'show', with a lot of repetition. This is not the only way in which the novel is repetitive. She has carried over the heavy sex scenes from the first novel into the sequel, but here too the repetition bothered me. That is not to say that the sex scenes themselves were repetitive, as she has clearly done her best to make each and every one different, but rather the long descriptions of what the main character is thinking and feeling as the sex occurs. At times I had the feeling I was reading fan-fiction rather than a bestselling YA/NA novel.

Honestly, this book was a bit of a let down following Blood and Ash. It was slow and repetitive at parts. However, I did read the entire thing and intend to read the next... So take that for what it's worth.
