This book was…. an experience. I had a lot more trouble getting through this one than I did with the first.

The reason I’m intrigued (hehe) with this book isn’t what drags most in. I like the world building this series has. I enjoy figuring out how this world works.

I am, however, constantly annoyed by Casteel. Poppy is okay and Kieran doesn’t have a personality. This book is such a rollercoaster of good and bad things that I both want to directly continue to the next book and at the same time lay it down for a while. That ending though….. How am I supposed to not read the next one directly after this?

I’m just…..

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire far exceeded my thoughts of From Blood and Ash, which was nevertheless was also a 5 star review.
We begin where we had left off exactly from the previous book, and it is full of action, *pretending*, secrets, conflict, hatred, and forgiveness. The From Blood and Ash world continues to develop, with the improvement of showing rather than telling (especially for Poppy). The final chapter leaves you begging for more.

This book is both technically incompetent and personally unappealing to me. So why read it? I wanted to know what the hype was. I get what the core fantasy is here, like whomst amongst us doesn’t enjoy a good kidnapping storyline? That doesn’t weigh up for the absolutely painful dialogue and unbearably blunt exposition. There isn’t a single instance of something being shown rather than told. The characters were hard to either relate to or admire: in Poppy’s case because she’s so completely braindead; in Casteel’s case because he doesn’t manage to walk the line between sexy and dangerous. I know this is the second book of the series, but despite not having read the first, I had no problem keeping track of the world building and plot because JLA would simply repeat it ad nauseam whenever she had nothing better to do. Casteel’s knife kink was mentioned so frequently, removing it would cost this book probably a solid 50-70 pages. Pages it could afford to lose, if you ask me. No judgment if this is your thing, I just wasn’t able to suspend my disbelief and indulge in the fantasy, but clearly it has mass appeal and that’s probably a good thing before it’s a bad one.

I'm heavily invested in this even though it's not like, groundbreaking writing or character development. But I'm emotionally invested. It's steamy and sexual in a lot of parts with a lot of kind of modernized banter for the time period it alludes to. The ending confused me, and now i have to wait 11 weeks for the next book to come off hold T_T But I am readyyyyyyyyy to read the next one I must know what happens.
