This is a quiet book about quiet people, and what it means to find one's own voice when one is constantly on the receiving end of other people's stories. The writing was very good, and I enjoyed the thoughts and words of the young woman protagonist who is continually watching and questioning what happens around her. An introvert heroine! Very happy to see her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first novel by Amy Rowland. It was refreshing to read something that provoked so much thought. As one whose career choices has limited contact with others I can appreciate how Lena felt connecting more with voices than with actual humans; limiting one's self conversely. I look forward to reading this again.

The Transcriptionist was puzzling to me; I struggled to connect the dots in Rowland’s prose. Perhaps the issue is that the subject matter felt too literal (prior news transcriptionist writing a novel about a transcriptionist wrestling with journalistic ethics), but other aspects of the story felt so disjointed (large felines ??). Is this a product of the writing or my inattentiveness? Off to the little free library it goes.
