DNF’ing this book cuz oh my god it was so freaking boring. Idk if it was because I was listening to it on audio book or what, but I was bored to tears THE ENTIRE TIME. I got a little over halfway through but I’m done. I can NOT finish it!!! It reads like a medical textbook and it’s SO BORING
Perfect summer read. Gripping and fast paced, I have been thoroughly entertained for two lazy summer days. It's a shame that the dialogues are awkward and implausible. There's not much of literary value to be found but the author surely knows his tricks.
Two things:
1. Exact same plot structure as the previous book I read. Med students become friends and puzzle over mystery. Strong tall thuglike men enter a house and kill people. There's nothing wrong with this structure for one story, but several cookie cutter stories in a row are not enjoyable.
2. Rape happens. WHY. Please, all authors, see this: RAPE IS NOT A PLOT DEVICE. The fact that the Russian operative dudes broke in the house and killed the kids and then the parents was enough; there was no reason for them to also rape the wife and jokingly discuss raping her again "while she was still warm." NOPE

Did not love it. All his stuff is predictable now, but this crime fighting duo was described using misogynistic and racist language. It was off putting and fake.

This was overall fairly well written and honestly rather dark for a Robin Cook novel. I do think that some of the amateur sleuthing that Lynn and Michael did was a little beyond their level, while simultaneously Cook makes it seem like medical students aren't allowed anywhere in a hospital when in reality, most people don't notice them all that much - which would make their sleuthing easier. Oh and yes, we get it - Michael is black. Stop beating it into our heads.
The whole time I was listening to this audiobook I kept thinking, "Isn't this brand new? I swear I've read this before!" Then I saw all the reviewers saying it was basically an "updated" Coma. Well...that explains a lot.
The audio reading is ok. It's George Guidall, who is always ok. Never amazing, never awful, always ok.
Overall, felt like I wasted my time.
