📖: Years ago, Lucy left her small Texas town after being found wandering down the street covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, not able to remember a single detail from the night before when Savvy was killed. Now, a true-crime podcaster wants to make Savvy’s story the focus of his show. In an attempt to remember what happened and either face the consequences or clear her name, Lucy heads back home and jumps head-first into the investigation.

This psychological thriller was kind of predictable (I knew who the culprit was by the 2nd interaction with that person), but still compelling. Even though I thought I knew where it was going, I didn’t have motivation or the rest of the pieces figured out, so I still enjoyed it. It was an interesting format– even though true crime podcast books are A THING right now, this one does it well! This was definitely a book to listen to on audio– the podcast excerpts that were included in the book were an especially effective use of the audio format, but I don’t know how well they’d work in a written format.

*I think this was a case of a book being overhyped, and that I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn’t gotten so much attention and so many rave reviews before I got to it.

Read this if… thrillers like In My Dreams I Hold A Knife, None of This Is True, or the show Only Murders in the Building are right up your alley!

This is the first book I haven’t been able to put down in a while and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sometimes you want a little bit of fun with your murder-mysteries and this was just that. Lucy, our snarky narrator, begrudgingly walks us through a true-crime podcaster digging through the past to figure out who killed her best friend Savvy. Apparently, it doesn’t look great when you’re found wandering down the street with a huge welt on your head and your best friend’s blood on your dress.

Full of twists, turns, and a murderous little voice whispering in her head, this novel keeps you guessing right to the very end.
