I was really surprised by how much I liked this!

Bearing in mind, this is a pretty short novel. So there's no in-depth plot or anything. It's a romantic little story about a woman and a man from the military who now bakes. Yes... he bakes. Sounds dorky, but I promise you it is in all of the best possible ways.

Allison is a good heroine in this book. Some of these short stories you read, the book tells you that this person isn't stupid, and then something happens and you find yourself thinking, "Um... well, if she's not stupid, then what the hell was that?". That did not happen here!

There's the start where neither Ed (our male lead) or Allison think the other has anything but brotherly or sisterly affection for the other. In a lot of books I've read, this is the part that ends up leading to a lot of 'stupid' that later happens in books. Not here! That's just how it is at first, and then we move on into the story later and things begin to shift nicely.

Ed, aka Ginger Jesus, is someone I need in my life. He's strong, he's kind, a bit gruff but still sweet. And he bakes. The man bakes, people! And some of the sweet things he says to Allison are just... ah, I would melt.

Reminding everyone now, it's a short little novel. Not huge underlying plot for us to focus on or anything like that. It's for the romance and the sexy times that take place inside that you are reading this book.
SpoilerAnd for the frosting scene. You are reading it so you can hear about frosting. Which isn't overly done... but it is in there and I enjoyed it.
There weren't that many errors or anything like that. A few instances where... I'm not sure if it switched tenses or if the word choice just felt strange to me... but they were easy to get past and didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story at all.

The only thing I can really call a complaint at all, and it's minor at best, is when emojis are apparently used in text messages that you read in this story. Because when I think of a winky face in text form, it doesn't have to be the emoji. You can do this... ;) ... and be just fine. It's a winky face, I get it. But the author, every time an emoji or something like that gets used, writes out what that emoji is meant to be. That kind of threw me for a minute, because at one point there's, like, three or four in a row and I had to do a double take to figure out what was going on. But again, this happens in the story, like, only two or three times. So like I said, minor complaint.

I love Allison's friends. EJ and Savannah. Savannah's replies in her text messages! It might just be me that finds it that funny, but I almost died. I'm standing here at work people. I can't just start laughing in my quiet office space. People will wonder what's wrong with me.

Not sure how I feel about Harry yet. He's a control freak a bit... but not like, the super annoying and every word he speaks makes you want to punch him kind of control freak. He's not trying to run everyone's lives. Not exactly. It's... he's a hard nut to crack in my opinion, so I don't know yet. But Fritz? Pretty sure I'm gonna love him when I get to him. And yes, I will be continuing this series at some point. I've been promised more cupcakes are involved. What more could I want? LOL

I got this book for free at the time, and I was skeptical because of that. But I'm happy to say I have no regrets. :) It was quick, it made me smile, I'm content. Thank you.

Delicious the first book in Melissa Schroeder's new Camos & Cupcakes series certainly lived up to its name. As it was deliciously sweet and fun to read, and I loved it. Plus, the characters were great, and I adored the Harry Potter references. So if you're looking for a fast paced, sweet story. That also has a big dash of sexy and a former military man who knows how to bake. Then this is the perfect book for you.

Would happily recommend.

I devoured this book. It is romantic, sweet, witty, funny and mixed with the right point of sexy. This is a great feel good read.

I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased , honest review.

This book was good, but also wayyyy too short. I love the brother’s best friend trope, particularly when the main character and the love interest are both so clueless, but in this case, the development to a relationship was way too fast. I wished the book was more of a slow burn, and that there was more character and relationship development.

This was awesome! A short. Spicy, 24 hour romance between friends to lovers/ brothers best friend. There’s a cup cake shop, drunk margaritas, and so many descriptions of food that I was really hungry. My only complaint would be that the writing felt like it needed another pass through on editing for some repetitiveness. But other than that it was fantastic and I will definitely read more from the author

I listened to this book as an audiobook, and I imagine some moments were more cringe based on that. So, I am trying to separate my feelings on that and give the book the benefit of the doubt that a big portion of cringe was simply from the audio.

That being said, there were some parts where just the dialogue was cringe and other parts were simply boring. The book starts out with pining from long time crushes, which sure, I love a good pine, but to some extent it was kind of obnoxious. How can two characters be that self-admittedly obvious about their crushes with everyone else seeming to know them but each other? It felt like we were just supposed to accept this self-imposed barrier as the readers without questioning it until the moment the characters were ready to confess.

I have my own cringe moments when a character calls a pussy a “kitty” and that was said far too much. So that lost some points there because I just find it far too cringe to overlook and enjoy the scene.

I did have an issue with the rush of the conclusion, but also just the brother’s entire coming in and that whole scene. It was also kind of shitty that Ed didn’t even seem to care about how things looked from Harry’s point. It was just him being all affronted that Harry would dare be upset. Same with Allison, she was pissed off that Harry wasn’t happy about walking in on his best friend and little sister kissing as if that’s so unreasonable for him to ask questions. The dramatization of Harry and his reaction following that was over the top and cliche to the point of eye rolling, but that initial moment of “how dare Harry not be immediately thrilled for our sexy times” was off putting.

Overall this book was quick and I guess if cringe can be your thing, then it could be seen as cute. I get secondhand embarrassment. I am going to try the next book, as it is longer, in hopes that there’s more build up. Being a significantly shorter book, this book did lack a build up as well as some more story development dedicated towards working through things. I am hoping the next book rectifies that.

such a cute romance. i love the brothers best friend trope. it’s such an easy read and i enjoyed it a lot. however, instalove isn’t my favorite which was pretty much what this was. if it wasn’t instalove i would have given it 5 stars. otherwise it was so GOOD and i’m now listening to the whole series.
