I haven't read these in a while but I still think that these are amazing books. Katniss is a great character and it's direct and straightforward writing and won't spend a chapter over random trivia on a battle that happened like years ago (*cough* les mis *cough*), which makes it an easy read. I love the universe and characters! (Also I'm rereading this so when the prequel comes out I will remember everything that happens...but isn't the prequel about President Snow idk)

This was my second time reading The Hunger Games. I attempted to read the whole series about 10 years ago but gave up part way through Catching Fire for reasons that I'll mention in that review.

I liked this book the first time I read it and overall this book lived up to my memory of it. Collins is a great writer and the drama and action were both very well written.

Additionally I really liked the characters, even when I didn't like them personally they all felt like real people and were well developed. I also thought that the depictions of mental illness and the effects of trauma were well done and realistic, this is definitely a strength of not just this book but the series overall.

The weakest part of this book was definitely the romantic relationships. They felt shallow and ingenuine. Unfortunately this is another theme that continues through the rest of the trilogy.

Overall this was a good book if you can ignore how weak the romance aspects come across. It definitely still holds up.
