This is an incredibly intricate world and it is fascinating. It did take me a while to get through this one but i probably will listen to the next one. This contains a lot of murder and brutality just be aware.

I'm really finding myself falling in love with this series - especially transitioning to audiobook, which really helped me keep track of the characters and the world so much better. Ophelia is another example of a female character who asserts herself through what I would say are unconventionally feminist means. What I mean by that is that she is unused to using her voice, and throughout this book she is really challenged to speak up for herself and does so in some really interesting ways. The side characters in this are delightfully weird and whimsical, which contrasts well with the danger that seems to be present at every turn. Also, BIG big fan of the slow burn of Ophelia and Thorne's love story here, my goodness.

A fun adventure story just as good as the first. Beginning is a bit slow but after 100 pages i couldn’t put it down.

However i still have a problem with the main character and the way she is treated. She is the mousy literate clumsy trope main character and she has begun standing up for herself and actually doing things however almost everyone in the story walks all over her. Her parents and her fiancé make decisions for her al the time and it drives me nuts. Although maybe that’s the point. but either way it’s annoying to read. id prefer less misogyny in my fantasy novels thanks

I got the feeling from the first book that it was only the beginning, and this instalment proved me right! Now that we’re in the swing of things, it’s time to watch the dominoes fall in a thrilling and tense mystery that has left me on tender hooks reaching for the next story.

A really fun read and the rare step up from the first in the series, in my opinion. I think that we get some much needed insight into the main characters and they are developed emotionally in interesting ways. The broader mystery I think is a weak point. Ophelia at times feels too much on the periphery of things, but we get some hints in this book, particularly at the end, as to how critical Ophelia is to the plot. I am intrigued to read more and see how the story develops from where things left off here.
