Fully the saddest book I've ever read, it had me sobbing on the sofa at 8.30AM
An exploration of grief and trauma, and both the individual drivers and the systemic drivers of. As quietly optimistic as it is sad, its not a hard book to read, despite it covering some of the darkest material I've ever read. The characters are charming and the language is easy, and again and again you are met with these notes of hope and love that help you push on through the grimness. The ending is a really interesting choice - I'm on the fence how I feel about it, but I think it was ultimately done well, and it's interesting how various things throughout the story set it up perfectly, so you understand it from multiple perspectives.

This book isn’t something I would necessarily recommend because of the themes it covers but I thought it was beautifully written and a really interesting reflective perspective was taken throughout the novel. I loved the part that ethnicity, culture and language played in it. It explored a lot of social problems in depth through the eyes of a character who had experienced a lot of hardship and also the lasting mental impact they can leave on a person.
I was really pleased that the ending was so positive especially after such an emotionally turbulent book and I found it fit the pace and style of the writing well
I wish i could read spanish so I could have understood the few fragments of it that were written in it.
