This book is something special. If you had told me I would fall in love with a M/F romance, set in a small town, written by a cis white man in present tense & single POV (a straight man’s), I would have laughed in your face. But joke’s on me I guess! Yep, I was deeply moved and fell in love with these characters.

This is definitely a romance but it is also very squarely about Colton’s struggle with his demons (grief and alcoholism). The prose is lush and evocative. The romance is deeply poignant (they were high school sweethearts and have both been married and divorced in the meantime) and we switch between the present and the past to get a real insight into Colton’s life and his connection with LouAnn. Plus, they are both around 40! Highly recommend.

I am glad I took a chance on this one despite not being a fan of southern things or country music or books written by men. But I am a big fan of books featuring redemption which this book had in spades. Some of the emotional weight was diffused by my picturing Travis Kelce as Colton Gentry. I feel like it was missing some chemistry between the two main characters but overall I liked them just fine.
