Since I L-O-V-E-D the first two books in this series I kept pushing on. I didn't care for #3 and was even less impressed with this installment (#4). At times I only kept reading hoping vero would snark.
There were 3 main aspects that turned me off
#1, this turned into part Romance novel. Fin can have a boyfriend, fine, but I was tired of hearing about her throbbing loins or how her boyfriend licked her underwear. While it wasn’t as smutty or as graphic as romance novels can be these scenes had no business being in this book or this series. The author either wants to branch out or needed filler? I started fast forwarding often gross no thanks.
#2 while none of the prior books had what you might call believable plots and storylines, the story is too far-fetched and over the top with coincidences piling on top of each other. The word that comes to mind is incredulous.
#3 vero, my favorite snarky and tough candy shell character turns into an almost love sick puppy who has barely any wit. The fun banter of the first two books is sorely missing.
SUMMARY: Finlay and Vero are headed to Atlantic City when Finlay's ex insists he has to come too because she's taking the children out of state. Finlay's mom is there as well. Then her cop sister and the sister's GF also show up along with Finlay's new boyfriend (also in law enforcement) but not until after F&V find some dead bodies while doing a little B&E. The law people know the badie is back in town and Finlay is at risk... all the drama. (This book is not a stand-alone but finishes the cliffhanger in #3).
Thanks netgalley for my ALC!

In this book Finlay and Vero are heading to Atlantic City to find Javi who was kidnapped at the end of the last book. Susan, Finlay's mom, decides to come and Steven tags along because he doesn't want his kids taken out of state. What could possibly go wrong? These books really have to be read in order and one story takes up where the last left off and adds more characters and more complications show up as Finlay and Vero find more bodies and flit around AC hiding from Steven and Susan and everyone else who showed up. They keep digging themselves deeper and deeper and Zach is still not potty trained. The character list got longer and longer. I had a hard time suspending my beliefs in this one. The banter between Vero and Finlay which was kind of fun in book 1 is getting tiresome this time around. I had hoped that with most of the loose ends tied up this was the end but it ends on another cliffhanger. To be honest I'm kind of disappointed and feel like I am hate reading right now. I'm not really a fan of Finlay and I have a hard time rooting for anyone except maybe Susan.

Maybe it was because of the change in setting, but I didn't love this one in Atlantic City. I thought it would be my favorite because of the gambling vibes, but adding in Finlay's mom lessened this one for me.
This one took me a little longer than the other Finlay Donovan books to get into. Still a fun book, definitely enjoyed it.
