Z knížky jsem maturovala a myslím, že z té maturitní četby je to jedna z těch lepších knih.

A chilling depiction of the holocaust, but weak in terms of characters and story. If there were any themes other than the monstrosity of holocaust, they were completely drowned in the expansive and omnipresent monologues of brenske. as for plot, that was just the characters riding around in a train and letting brenske milk money from them. the 20 jewish men mostly morphed into a mass of undistinguishable characters for me, and kateřina was just an off-puttingly sexualized child-woman who spent most of her time staying silent and looking pretty but in the end got to have a few seconds of glory.

Tato kniha mě velice zasáhla. Slzy se dostavily až potom, co jsem zaklapla knížku. Knížky tohoto typu vás donutí nad něčím přemýšlet a něco si uvědomit, ale je jen na vás co.

Even though the story may or may not have happened, the book left me with a devastating impression of the horrors experienced by the Jewish victims of the WWII concentration camps, and of the unfulfilled hopes of those trying to evade the future (or the lack thereof) planned by the Nazis.
The narrative style reminded me of some works written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt where the main character is destined to die and the reader knows that but misses the links leading from the beginning to the inevitable conclusion.
The tension, created within the boundaries of the few events taking place within the time span of not more than two days, made my hands tremble, and I passionately hate the insufferably ironic Nazi officer (whose manipulative speeches are ubiquitous in this novella).
