I listened to this one, so my negative impression may be due to the poor narrator, but overall this was a rather boring story with one-dimensional characters. Disappointed since I enjoyed the Amelia Peabody stories.

I wish the characters were a little bit more fleshed out, they all seemed identicall to me, i couldn’t care less who the murderer was because of that. i liked the setting thought, and it was easy to read

I'd read this years ago, but remembered nothing about it except the ridiculously contrived "clue" regarding the murderer's identity. The book itself wasn't bad, but I still don't buy
Spoilerthat even a lifelong classics scholar would think of Roman numerals before they'd think of the letters that make it up
.

Still, I enjoy the writing and the characters, especially Jacqueline Kirby, and I'll be carrying on with the series.

The evocation of Rome and young scholarly friendship is lovely, but this strikes me as one of Peters' sadder standalones. There's no romantic subplot to ease up the disturbing implications of the crime in the foreground.

Nothing can compare to Amelia P. Emerson, so it was a little disappointing. The POV was weird, since Jacqueline Kirby is supposed to be the main character?
