Loooooooooved this book. The writing, the story, the imagination, the ability to draw parallels between current events. As an adult I loved this series and I will be recommending it to everyone I can.

So many characters to keep track of and it has been just enough time between books that I might have forgotten about one or two, but it did come back.  Because there were so many characters I felt like it took away from the storytelling a bit.  The characters were so strong, but we never really got their whole stories.  Felt like there was more to tell.

I love the world this author built, but this story didn't hit quite as powerfully as her first. While I really enjoy multiple POV, I think there were so many POVs in this book that it made it hard to connect with individual characters in a lasting way, which made me feel disconnected from their clashing viewpoints - I wanted to be more conflicted, but the narrative didn't give me time to relate to each of them in a significant way. I did really enjoy the finale, and the magical qualities of this story really speak to me, but somehow there was still a disconnect.

That being said, I think this is a really solid YA fantasy with an anti-colonialist message, and maybe I'm asking too much of it. I think for young readers this will be an extremely satisfying fantasy read, and I hope this book does well with those audiences.

I sadly did not enjoy this nearly as much as I had hoped

First of all I want to clarify, that this review might differ if I had known, that this is a sequel. It was not mentioned anywhere on or in my copy. And I double checked.
Now if it was not directly a sequel that would be even worse, because then the worldbuilding might have been great, we just dont know that because it isn't really mentioned. More assumed that one should know.

There were to many POVs for such a short book. I did not really feel with any of the characters when something bad happend, because I didn't get to know them.
Halfway through the book there are still plot relevant and new characters introduced.

It also felt a bit cramped with everything. Why would u mention something maybe interesting, like a gay lovestory once but then never again ??? It felt like ticking of a box and I did not enjoy it. (Mainly because I didn't get to know the characters. )

The writing itself was nice. I just wouldn't recommend this book.
Neither if you like good fantasy nor if you like romance or if you like complex characters. Sure they were. But I don't start to care about that if we only have a few chapters with them.
